The essentials of the day before

  • Aid workers were killed in an Israeli strike in Gaza on Monday. These are seven members of the NGO World Central Kitchen (WCK), which announced that it was suspending its activities in the region after the tragedy. Faced with international outcry, the Israeli army promised an investigation and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu admitted an “unintentional” strike. Then, on Tuesday evening, President Isaac Herzog presented his “apologies”.

  • US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Tuesday that Israel must do "more to protect innocent civilians" in Gaza, and called for a "rapid and impartial" investigation into the Israeli strike that killed members of the NGO WCK. “The protection of humanitarian workers is a moral and legal imperative to which everyone must adhere,” said the head of French diplomacy, StĂ©phane SĂ©journĂ©, who expressed France’s “firm condemnation.”

  • The United Nations Security Council on Tuesday held a public session at Russia's request on the Israeli raid in Damascus on an Iranian embassy annex, in which two Revolutionary Guard commanders were killed.

  • The Palestinians officially relaunched the procedure to become a full member state of the UN on Tuesday, according to a letter from their UN ambassador seen by AFP. They have had observer status since 2012.

Please note: the number of victims is provided by the Hamas-led Gaza Ministry of Health.

The ministry collects information provided by hospitals in the enclave and by the Palestinian Red Crescent.

The Health Ministry in Gaza does not indicate how the Palestinians were killed, whether by Israeli airstrikes and/or barrages or failed Palestinian rocket attacks. It describes all victims as victims of "Israeli aggression" and also does not distinguish between civilians and combatants.

During the four wars and numerous skirmishes between Israel and Hamas, United Nations agencies regularly cited Health Ministry figures in their reports. The International Committee of the Red Cross and the Palestinian Red Crescent also use these figures.

In the aftermath of previous episodes of war, the United Nations Humanitarian Office published casualty figures based on its own research into medical records. The UN figures largely agree with those of the Gaza Ministry of Health, with a few differences.
