Hardly any film has shaped the past year like “Barbie”. On the one hand, the blockbuster has made its mark in cinema history with eight nominations at the Oscars, a better box office result than the “Harry Potter” finale and one record after another. But the film also sparked various debates outside of cinemas - and apparently continues to do so today.

In an interview with the US magazine Allure, Shakira revealed her opinion about the film. Some of her fans may be surprised by the attitude of the Colombian singer, who achieved worldwide success with hits like "Hips Don't Lie" and is repeatedly criticized for her appearance.

“My sons absolutely hated it,” Shakira says in the interview. And adds: »They thought he was emasculating. And I agree with them, to a certain extent," Shakira said of the film. "I like pop culture when it tries to empower women without taking away the opportunity for men to be men, to protect and to provide."

About her stance on feminism, she added: »I believe that we should give women all the tools and the confidence that we can do all of this without losing our essence, our femininity. I believe that men have one role in society and women have another. We complement each other and this relationship should not be lost.«

Shakira was criticized on social networks for her statements. But she also received encouragement – for example from the controversial conservative presenter Piers Morgan.

With more than 60 million albums sold, Shakira is one of the most successful musicians of the past two decades. This year, seven years after the last, their new album was released: »Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran«. In German: “The women don’t cry anymore.”
