  sudden change

Nie Shulan, who is over seventy years old, comes from rural Tuquan County, Xing'an League, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. She has two sons who are only one year apart. After both graduated from the Inner Mongolia Police School, they worked together in the Tuquan County Public Security Bureau and became glorious people's policemen.

"I was very happy every day at that time. I would wait for them at the door while cooking every day, staring at the corner of the road in front of the door." Nie Shulan recalled.

But an accident happened. On the evening of December 9, 2002, Nie Shulan prepared dinner as usual and waited for her son to come home from get off work, but this time what she was waiting for was the news that her youngest son Jia Li was being rescued in the hospital.

Jia Li is a policeman from the Traffic Control Brigade of Tuquan County Public Security Bureau. That day, while on duty, he signaled a three-wheeled motorcycle to stop for inspection. However, the motorcycle not only failed to slow down, but also directly knocked him down. Jia Li's head hit the guardrail on the roadside and he fell unconscious on the spot. He was then taken to the hospital by colleagues for a craniotomy.

Nie Shulan rushed to the hospital after hearing the news. When she saw her youngest son for the first time, her heart felt as if someone had grasped it tightly with his hands. Her youngest son, who had been chatting and laughing with her while having lunch a few hours ago, was now covered in blood and unconscious. She cried until she almost fainted at the door of the operating room, praying in her heart. However, the surgical results were not ideal. Despite traveling to and from many places for treatment, half a year later, Jia Li never regained consciousness and was finally diagnosed as a vegetative state. Nie Shulan was 54 years old at the time.

  wake up son

Nie Shulan never believed that her 26-year-old son could only spend the rest of his life in bed. In just a few weeks, Nie Shulan's hair turned white and she became thinner.

Every night in the hospital, Nie Shulan looked at her son in the hospital bed, and those beautiful scenes from the past would come to mind. She had a belief in her heart that she could not let her son lie down all the time and must let him wake up.

Cleaning her son's toilet, trimming his nails, and shaving his beard... After her son was discharged from the hospital and returned home to recuperate, Nie Shulan's life became a fixed pattern. Whenever she had time, she would hold her son's hand and chat. From the past to the present, She carefully cared for this "big child" until she burst into tears.

It is obviously difficult for a mother who is 1.5 meters to wipe the body of her son who is 1.8 meters tall. She is often exhausted and sweating profusely, but she has no regrets. "I only have one belief in my heart that my son will be able to wake up."

With his mother's careful care, Jia Li ushered in the miracle of life. After sleeping for 198 days, he miraculously woke up.

"My son has woken up, my son has woken up." Nie Shulan cried with joy and said to everyone she met.

However, Jia Li only "woke up" and still couldn't speak and couldn't take care of himself. His originally gentle personality became extremely irritable.

"When he is manic, he often makes noises day and night, hitting everyone he sees and smashing things." Nie Shulan would often be beaten black and blue by her son, and could only sleep for two or three hours a night.

No one is born to be a mother, but maternal love is innate. Even though she is suffering physically and mentally, Nie Shulan is still full of hope in her heart.

In order to help her son recover better, Nie Shulan, who has a low level of education, began to learn about nutrition and prepare three meals a day at regular intervals. There are pieces of paper taped to the kitchen wall, recording the son's blood pressure, blood sugar, water drinking time, and defecation time.

  22 years of protection

After Jia Li was injured on the job, relevant departments provided support and help many times. During every festival, the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region Public Security Department, Xing'an League Public Security Bureau, Tuquan County Party Committee and Public Security Bureau would go to express their condolences.

"In my heart, the police are synonymous with glory. Even if something like this happened, I have never regretted letting my son become a police officer. Being a police officer is both their dream and my wish," Nie Shulan said.

In 2024, Nie Shulan was named the "Police-loving Mother of the National Public Security Bureau".

Nie Shulan's eldest son Jia Jun is also a people's policeman. In order to allow her son to work with peace of mind, Nie Shulan not only took care of Jia Li, but also took care of the housework for three generations of the family. Overwork caused her to suffer from coronary heart disease, cerebral thrombosis, and diabetes. and multiple diseases.

Initially suffering from illness, Nie Shulan secretly endured it and never told her family. It wasn't until she was sent to the hospital for emergency treatment that her family realized that her health was in such bad shape.

However, even so, Nie Shulan still took care of Jia Li personally every time after being discharged from the hospital. Although some people advised her to find a professional caregiver, she refused. "You can rest assured that you can take care of my son by yourself." Nie Shulan said.

Seeing her mother working hard for three generations of the family for half her life, her eldest daughter-in-law decided to accompany her mother and shoulder the burden of taking care of Jia Li.

"As long as our little son has a breath, we will not give up. I want my son's life to continue and wait for a miracle to happen." Nie Shulan said. (over)
