A ceremony was held on the 30th to mark the deployment of the first surface-to-ship missile unit on Okinawa's main island to the Ground Self-Defense Force's base in Uruma City, Okinawa Prefecture.

In an effort to strengthen the defense capabilities of the Nansei Islands, the Ministry of Defense this month deployed a Type 12 surface-to-ship missile unit to attack ships at the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force Katsuren Camp in Uruma City, central Okinawa Main Island.

On the 30th, a ceremony was held with around 90 people from the Ministry of Defense and local officials in attendance, and Vice Minister of Defense Oniki said, ``We will play a central role in the defense system of the southwest region by blocking and eliminating invasions on islands at sea.'' "I want you to work hard every day," he said.

This is the first deployment of a surface-to-ship missile unit on the main island of Okinawa, and it will also be responsible for commanding missile units on Miyakojima, Ishigakijima, and Amami Oshima in Kagoshima Prefecture.

Meanwhile, more than 80 members of a citizen group opposed to the deployment gathered outside the military base and protested, holding placards that read "No missiles."

A 72-year-old local man who participated in the protest said, ``I am opposed to the deployment of missiles because it increases the risk of becoming a target and also strengthens the base's functions.''

The Type 12 surface-to-ship missile is being considered to be improved in the future to extend its range, and to be equipped with counterattack capabilities that allow it to attack enemy missile launch bases.

Governor Tamaki of Okinawa Prefecture has expressed opposition to the deployment of equipment with "counterattack capabilities."
