The moments before the disaster, captured by a surveillance camera on the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore. The recordings have now been published. There is still traffic at night, but thanks to the quick response of the traffic control center, the bridge is closed. At the moment when the container freighter Dali rams the support pillar, only the vehicles of a group of construction workers are left on the bridge. Six workers die.

Four days after the accident, experts are still looking for the cause of the collision. What is known is that the ship reported problems with the power supply, which apparently led to the inability to maneuver.

Sal Mercogliano, Campbell University:

»If you lose power, you lose propulsion and rudder. I wonder when the emergency generator kicked in, though. Because we see that the ship had power again, that was the emergency generator. You can tell by which lights are on on the ship that it was the emergency generator. And it should be strong enough to power the rudder. But apparently that wasn't the case, because the ship continued to drift south."

Salvage work is ongoing in parallel with the cause investigation. And they are complicated, a large part of the collapsed bridge structure lies in the Patapsco River. The US Navy has sent four recovery cranes, including the strongest equipment available on the US East Coast. But even this crane cannot lift some of the twisted steel parts, which weigh several tons; they have to be cut first.

Maryland Governor Wes Moore:

»Just looking at the freighter, almost as big as the Eiffel Tower. And then there is the Key Bridge on top. Containers torn in half like papier-mâché. It's windy out there, there are power lines. When you drive out there and see that, you realize what a huge task it is.”

The US government alone has promised 60 million euros in emergency aid to at least clear the shipping channel into the port of Baltimore as quickly as possible, because the disaster in Baltimore has an impact on shipping traffic and supply chains worldwide. But not only that.

Change of location to Azapualca in the mountains of Honduras, around 3000 kilometers away. Here, relatives mourn the loss of one of the missing men, who years earlier had set off from the Central American country for the USA to find work. They hope that the search for the victims will not be stopped.

Martin Suazo, brother of an accident victim:

“We're still waiting and hoping for them to find our brother's body so we can bring him back home. That is the most important thing for us. So, God willing, the US government decides not only to get the bridge parts out of the water, but also to continue searching for the bodies.

Trade unions and migrant organizations are also campaigning for this locally in Baltimore. On Thursday, colleagues gathered to remember the six victims. And also to remind people of how important they are to American society in times of the election campaign when Donald Trump is virtually demonizing migrants.

»We are all with you. Here and now and always."
