Two political analysts considered that the decline in the American people’s support for the Israeli occupation war on the Gaza Strip - which was shown by the American Gallup poll - is “historic and unprecedented,” but they also believe that it will not have much impact on the upcoming elections.

Despite the heavy curtain imposed by the American media on Israel’s transgressions and violations in its war on Gaza, as well as the protection provided by the American administration for the occupation and its transgressions, popular support in America for the war on Gaza declined significantly, as about 10% of Americans changed their point of view from supporting the war. To those who oppose it, according to the poll conducted by Gallup this month, which concluded that the percentage of those who now oppose the war rose to 55%, compared to 45% of those included in a previous poll in November.

Khaled Tarani, an expert in American affairs and international relations, said that this decline reflects the occupation’s failure to market its criminal war, as many have come to see it as a genocidal war, despite the American media’s bias towards the Israeli narrative that the war is against the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) and not against the Palestinian people.

Historical decline

But Tarani added during his participation in the program “Gaza...what next?” Although the decline is “historic,” its consequences and effects must not be overestimated, as the issue of war is not among the priorities of American voters, and therefore it is not expected to significantly affect their choices in the elections, whether presidential or even congressional elections.

Tarani believes that the influence is more linked to the activity of the Arab and Islamic communities and activists opposing the war on Gaza, which could exploit this decline in achieving his goal of toppling Joe Biden, and linking this fall to his position in support of the occupation and his lack of effective rejection of the genocide in the Gaza Strip.

In this context, he pointed out that for 45 years Muslims have been voting for the Democrats, but in the end they got this genocide, and therefore it is important for them to have an effective move so that their voice can be heard, through a strong message to bring down those who support genocide.

Tarani does not believe that there is a real difference between the current position of the American administration and the position of the occupation. Rather, it is a difference over the means, not the goals, as two-thirds of the bombs dropped by the occupation on Gaza still come from the United States of America.

Regarding the fear that Donald Trump’s return to the presidency will be worse than Biden’s continuation, the American affairs expert said that he does not imagine a worse situation than the situation is now, and therefore what is most important is to deliver the message of rejection and hold the current administration accountable for the consequences of its support for Israel.

Opportunity for correction

Regarding whether there is room for Biden to correct his position, Tarani believes that the opportunity still exists, as he can end the war in an hour by activating two laws, one of which prevents support for any country that prevents the delivery of humanitarian aid to those who deserve it, and the other cuts off military support for those who use it to Committing war crimes.

For his part, Dr. William Lawrence, a former American diplomat, believes that this shift is the biggest change in the position on the war on Gaza, and it is remarkable and significant because it occurred despite the failure of the local media to cover the situation in the Gaza Strip in the desired manner.

He explained that social media played a large and important role in providing information and live scenes supporting the Palestinians, and it is increasing day after day. He also pointed out that many influencers on social media platforms changed their positions in favor of rejecting the continuation of the war on the Gaza Strip.

However, Lawrence believes that this change is not at the necessary speed that would affect the political reality in the United States, but its continued escalation will be reflected in America’s policies in the future.

He believes that this curve of change began in 2008, and it continues and will continue to benefit the Palestinian state, but he pointed out that if Trump returns to power, this will cause a catastrophic shift in the opposite direction that will not be in the interest of Arabs and Muslims.
