The American abstention from voting in the Security Council on a ceasefire resolution in the Gaza Strip dominated the headlines of the international press as it followed the Israeli occupation war on the Strip.

After the United States abstained from voting, the United Nations Security Council adopted - yesterday, Monday - a resolution demanding an immediate ceasefire between Israel and the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas).

The remaining 14 members of the Council supported the resolution proposed by the 10 elected members of the Council, which also demands the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages and the parties' commitment to international law towards the detainees.

In an article in Newsweek magazine, the head of Americans for Peace Now, Hadar Susskind, said that US President Joe Biden made the right decision to abstain from voting and allow the passage of the Security Council resolution on a ceasefire in Gaza.

The writer saw that Biden makes clear with this position that the war in the Gaza Strip must end, which is a first step in restricting the Israeli government, which has lost all semblance of legitimacy, as he put it.

Netanyahu will destroy Israel

In turn, Haaretz newspaper, in its editorial, accused Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of becoming a tool for the destruction of Israel, because he exposes it to strategic risks that may cost it dearly, and he also deliberately harms the citizens of Israel for the sake of his political survival.

The newspaper added that Netanyahu only has himself to blame, because the Americans did their best to make clear to Israel that their patience had run out, and called on him to resign to give Israel a chance to save itself.

While Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper published an analysis by writer Itamar Eichner, in which he saw that the Security Council’s resolution negatively affects the hostage deal negotiations, and sends a message to the international community that Israel has become more isolated than ever before, and this could later be an excuse for countries to take diplomatic measures. Against Israel.

As for the French newspaper Le Monde, it said that the American abstention from voting in the Security Council sparked an open crisis with Israel, and reflected discontent with Netanyahu, adding that after the vote, Israel became “alone and exposed.”

Commenting on fears of Israel's refusal to abide by the Security Council resolution, the French Media Part website quotes French legal expert Johann Sophie as emphasizing that the parties to the conflict are obligated to respect the terms of the resolution, and if the opposite happens, the Security Council will be forced to take other measures such as sanctions.

The Guardian newspaper published an article by US Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, in which she called on the United States to stop facilitating mass killing in the Gaza Strip by taking the step of suspending the supply of weapons to Israel.
