They are resisting Söder's gender ban. In Munich on Sunday

, young and queer people

in particular

demonstrated for the right to gender-sensitive language. Because: Since Tuesday, word symbols such as the gender asterisk or the

colon have been banned by law in Bavaria's schools, universities and authorities.

Sophie Boner, activist:

"The truth is that nobody likes to talk about gender as much as right-wingers

and conservatives and that nothing is currently dividing society as much as the

ban party CSU."

Around 650 demonstrators gathered in the Isarvorstadt. Organizers

of the queer feminist group Slutwalk called for the demo.

Sophie Boner, activist:

»Of course I can't get into Mr. Söder's head to see what the goal of the

gender ban is. However, I know what it will lead to, namely even more

discrimination for queer people, especially for queer young people.

The group is not concerned with an obligation to gender. But: Everyone should

be free to use language the way he or she wants – without legal prohibitions.

Fluxsane, activist:

»Personally, I gender depending on the situation. In writing, I usually gender

constantly, especially on social media and especially in an academic

context, for example in my master's thesis. In private use of language

, I distinguish who I am currently speaking to. When I speak Bavarian, it's

sometimes difficult with gender anyway, but I try

to integrate as well as possible. I prefer terms that are general like

students or participants.«

The implementation of the ban in Bavaria still raises questions.

According to the CSU,

teachers must adhere to this in class and in official correspondence.

However, students should not receive lower grades if they

use gender-appropriate language. According to the coalition agreement

, the black-red coalition in Hesse also plans

to ban special gender symbols in state institutions.
