A serious accident occurred in Freiburg on Friday morning around 7:40 a.m. A 46-year-old and two children were hit by a car. As the police announced on Sunday, a five-year-old was seriously injured.

The cyclist wanted to cross a street with his cargo bike when a 51-year-old driver overlooked him. The 46-year-old was on a footpath and cycle path and would have had the right of way. Instead, there was a collision with the car.

The cargo bike was rammed in the rear right area. The man fell to the ground along with the five and eight year old children. The five-year-old child was taken to hospital with serious leg injuries. The police started the investigation.

The Freiburg traffic police are now looking for possible witnesses who observed the accident.

More bikes, more accidents

According to accident researchers, the number of accidents in Germany is also increasing as bicycle traffic continues to grow. Children should therefore wear a seatbelt in all means of transport and wear a helmet. There is still a lot to be improved in the design of bicycles, trailers and seats and in government regulations (read all about the latest results of crash tests with child transport vehicles here).

Accordingly, trailers often turn sideways, get stuck on obstacles and are often overlooked by drivers, for example when turning.
