Islamic preacher Nabil Al-Awadi explains the importance of the commandments that Luqman Al-Hakim left to his son, which have become a curriculum for educators and parents throughout the ages. He calls for adopting these commandments, especially in the present time, where social media controls the interests and minds of children.

The episode (3/23/2024) of the program “Sharia and Life in Ramadan” dealt with the story of Luqman, to whom God Almighty gave wisdom and gave commandments on his tongue to his son while admonishing him. These commandments contained advice and guidance.

God Almighty gave Luqman, the righteous and simple servant, wisdom, and made an entire surah in his name that narrates some of his sermons, even though he was not a prophet, according to the sayings of the people of the world. And God Almighty said, “And We have given Luqman wisdom.”

Among the narrations that the Islamic preacher gives about Luqman is that he was given a choice between prophecy and wisdom, so he chose to be wise, and when he was asked about the reason, he said, “I was afraid that God - the Almighty and Majestic - would make me prophecy and not give it its due.”

The first of the sermons that Luqman gave to his son was the command to monotheism and the prohibition of polytheism, and it was mentioned in Surat Luqman: “And when Luqman said to his son while he was advising him, ‘O my son, do not associate partners with God. Indeed, polytheism is a great injustice.’”

Dr. Al-Awadhi confirms that the worst type of injustice is for a person to be an equal to God, Glory be to Him, the Almighty, and He is the one who created him, and that monotheizing Him, Glory be to Him, and forbidding polytheism with Him are among the greatest matters and the most obligatory duties. Luqman instructed his son with this commandment in a beautiful and gentle fatherly manner, “O my son.”

Kindness to parents

The second commandment that Luqman gave to his son after the monotheism of God - the Almighty - was the recommendation to parents, as God Almighty said in Surat Luqman: “And We have enjoined upon man concerning his parents;

The Islamic preacher points out that the people of interpretation disagreed about this verse. Is it on the tongue of Luqman or did it come accidentally in the context of the verses in order to arrange them?

The recommendation to the parents - as Dr. Al-Awadi adds - is one of the greatest commandments that Luqman left to his son, because God Almighty enjoined the right of the parents immediately after his right, when he said in Surah Al-Isra: “And your Lord has decreed that you should not worship except Him and be good to the parents.”

In his interpretation of Luqman’s commandment to his son, as stated in the Almighty’s saying: “And follow the path of those who repent,” the Islamic preacher confirms that this verse indicates the importance of good company, and he says that the role of parents is to search for good company for their children, especially at the present time, where means of communication dominate. Social influence on children's interests.

Regarding the Almighty’s saying in Surat Luqman: “O my son, if it were the weight of a mustard seed, be it in a rock or in the heavens or in the earth, God will bring it forth. Indeed, God is Kind and All-Knowing,” Al-Awadi explains that this verse is one of the greatest verses about the power and knowledge of God - the Almighty - and His knowledge. With the secrets of matters, it explains that the injustices, mistakes, or sins committed by a person, even if they are small, will be brought to justice by God - the Almighty - on the Day of Resurrection.
