Belgium's Federal Parliament

has

approved a bill that will ban smoking in open spaces of amusement parks and zoos, children's play areas or sports facilities starting next year.

The text, adopted in a plenary session on Thursday night without any vote against and only with the abstention of the far-right Flemish party

Vlaams Belang

, also provides that smoking cannot be allowed within ten meters of the entrances and exits of schools, libraries or health facilities.

However, the measure does not affect terraces of bars and restaurants linked to sports centers, but the ban on non-smoking in the facilities applies even if the sports space is being used for other purposes, for example, concerts.

It also contemplates that smoking areas can be installed in the affected establishments, to which minors will not be able to access.

The new rules will come into force on December 31, 2024, and join other anti-smoking measures recently approved in Belgium, such as raising the price of cigarettes or limiting points of sale.
