Millennials beware, “The Sims” is being made into a film. At least that's what industry services such as "Hollywood Reporter" and "Variety" report, citing two production companies. Accordingly, Kate Herron will direct and write the screenplay. “Barbie” actress and producer Margot Robbie is also involved.

As a director, Herron is already responsible for successful series such as “Sex Education” and “Loki”. According to information, she will write the script together with Briony Redman. The film will be produced by LuckyChap, the production company run by Margot Robbie, Tom Ackerley, Josey McNamara and Sophia Kerr, which achieved two major successes last year with “Barbie” and “Saltburn”. With revenues of over $1.4 billion, “Barbie” was the most successful film worldwide in 2023.

Also involved are Roy Lee and Miri Yoon from Vertigo Entertainment, who also have experience in filming game content with the “Lego Movies”. Electronic Arts, the publisher of the video game, is also said to be involved in the film.

The first edition of “The Sims” came onto the market in 2000. Four more games followed, as well as various spin-offs and expansions. With more than 200 million games sold, “The Sims” is considered one of the most successful video games in the world.

Pool ladder with cult status

In the game, characters are created, houses are built, careers are pursued and families are started. It was one of the first games in which users could build their own virtual worlds without pursuing a specific game goal. Nevertheless, some tactics have achieved a kind of cult status: those who wanted to get rich quickly used the “Rosebud” cheat; Anyone who wanted to live out their sadistic streak removed one or two pool ladders next to a bathing Sim.

Whether these details will appear in the film remains to be seen. So far it hasn't even been announced whether the film will be animated or whether a live-action adaptation is planned. There is also no information about the cast yet.
