A driver chased around 20 police patrol cars in Upper Franconia.

As the police announced on Sunday, the escape ended on Saturday in Schwarzenbach an der Saale (Hof district) when the 42-year-old drove his car off the road due to excessive speed and ended up in a ditch.

The officers wanted to check the driver in the evening.

However, he accelerated and tried to escape on several state and federal highways as well as the Autobahn 9 towards Berlin.

He sometimes drove up to 100 km/h in towns and up to 190 km/h outside of town.

He also endangered other road users, the police said.

Even a roadblock couldn't stop the man: he drove around it.

According to police, when the man finally landed in the ditch, he tried to back out and crashed into a patrol car.

According to reports, he resisted when several officers took him out of the car and handcuffed him.

He was slightly injured.

The 42-year-old's driver's license was taken away;

He is being investigated for several crimes.

The police estimated the damage at around 8,000 euros.

The man probably fled because his vehicle was not registered, the police said.
