  • XXI Joaquín Manso International Journalism Awards: "In this context, journalism is the voice that challenges official narratives and exposes the authentic truth"

The director of EL MUNDO, Joaquín Manso, has highlighted the profound impact of the change that our society is going through.

With an appeal to the combative and nonconformist spirit with which this newspaper was founded, and which it still maintains, he has urged an eminently young public to

reinforce its commitment to the truth

.

"We have to be aware of what our reason for being is, what gives meaning to our work: differentiating truth from lies," he stressed.

The culmination of the silver anniversary of the Huesca Journalism Congress has been dynamic

thanks to its conversational format

.

Two students from EL MUNDO's Master of Journalism and a student from EL MUNDO's Master of Investigative, Data and Visualization Journalism have accompanied Manso to discuss the concerns of his generation.

The uncertainty regarding Artificial Intelligence and the apparent complexity of the situation that the profession is going through worries younger journalists.

"It's difficult but not devastating

," Manso said.

"Those who arrive now have a greater level of commitment and understanding than their predecessors," he added.

The director of EL MUNDO has pointed out that "there are issues in which it is difficult for AI to replace human capacity";

asking questions is one of them.

"There is something irreplaceable: ingenuity," he stated.

"There is no AI that replaces the ability to intuit the whys of stories. The objective is to create a critical moral conscience," he stated.

Likewise, the common thread of the colloquium has been optimism because Joaquín Manso considers that what is truly important is "the concern for information" of the youngest readers.

"It is inevitable that the consumption of information

will be more visual

as a matter of cultural impact," he said.

Along these lines, he added that the journalists who will make up the newsrooms in the future enjoy a more precise and direct "understanding" and "connection."

On the other hand, as a preamble to his intervention, the director of EL MUNDO participated in a press conference with the journalist

Marta García Aller.

In the heat of a conversation with the winner of the Blasillo 2024 award, Manso clarified that "journalism is a vocation for change."

This profession, which is subject to current events, must be renewed and adapted to the transformations that are emerging.

"It is mandatory to make a new newspaper for a new generation of readers every day."

This concludes this edition of the Journalism Congress, which has been marked by a

period of "intense" and "unpredictable" changes

that this profession faces.

In this sense, Manso has assured that a "well-informed public opinion is the most important of all counterpowers and the best engine of social change."
