The American musician and frontman of the band The Raspberries, Eric Carmen, died at the weekend at the age of 74.

His wife Amy Carmen announced this on the artist's official website.

She did not provide any information about the cause of death.

“It gave him great joy to know that his music had touched so many people over the decades and would be his lasting legacy,” she writes.

She ends the message with a quote from one of Carmen's songs: "Love Is All That Matters ... Faithful and Forever", which translates to: "Love is all that matters, faithful and forever."

Born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1949, the singer rose to fame in 1976 with the song “All by Myself.”

He was previously the singer of the band The Raspberries, which he founded in 1970, but which broke up five years later.

In 1987 he had another hit with “Hungry Eyes,” which was also featured in the successful film “Dirty Dancing.”

In 2000, he toured with Beatles drummer Ringo Starr, playing his greatest hits.

Four years later he performed again with his band The Raspberries.

Carmen is survived by two children, Kathryn and Clayton, whom he had with his second wife, Susan Brown.

He married Amy Murphy in 2016.
