In the winter of 2023, the Changshou District Public Security Bureau obtained a clue involving fake and inferior electric blankets during its work.
The police followed the lead and found that the case involved a wide area, a large number of people involved, and complex network information.
The Anti-Counterfeiting Corps of the Chongqing Municipal Public Security Bureau and the Changshou District Public Security Bureau set up a task force to investigate, and a nationwide criminal network for the production and sale of counterfeit brand electric blankets emerged.
After investigation, the criminal suspect Li (male, 39 years old, from Hebei Province) gathered relatives and fellow villagers to form a criminal gang and rented private houses, abandoned factories, and commercial storefronts in the urban-rural fringe areas of Hebei, Jiangsu and other places as production and sales bases. Semi-finished electric blankets are purchased from the Internet, and after assembly, labeling, and packaging, they are sold online at 30% off genuine electric blankets to all parts of the country.
After grasping the relevant evidence and criminal facts, under the guidance of the Ministry of Public Security, the task force recently went to Hebei and Jiangsu to carry out simultaneous network closing operations.
With the assistance of the local police, the task force arrested 11 suspects, eliminated 2 criminal gangs, destroyed 8 "black dens" for production, storage, and sales, and seized more than 20,000 finished and semi-finished electric blankets of counterfeit well-known brands. More than 35,000 parts such as electric blankets and thermostats were seized, and several counterfeit production equipment were seized. The items involved were worth more than 1 million yuan and the total amount involved in the case exceeded 20 million yuan.
According to the appraisal of the Chongqing Institute of Metrology and Quality Inspection, the input power and current items of the counterfeit electric blanket involved in the case did not meet the national mandatory standards and were substandard products.
Counterfeit electric blankets have problems such as heating wires without safety protection wires, uneven heating, easy resistance short-circuit, controllers without short-circuit protection and over-temperature protection, and temperature control failure, posing risks of fire and electric shock.
At present, the main suspect in the case has been subject to criminal coercive measures, and the case is under further investigation.
