on the red carpet of the 96th Academy Awards to call for a

ceasefire in Gaza

"We call for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza.

We ask for lasting peace and justice for the Palestinian people

," Youssef told Variety.

"It's a universal message: 'Let's stop killing children. Let's not get involved in any more wars.' No one has ever looked back on the war and thought that a bombing campaign was a good idea. A lot of people are going to be wearing these badges tonight," he pointed.

In October, a group of 400 prominent artists signed a letter urging US President Joe Biden to demand a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.

Among the signatories were, in addition to Youssef himself, great Hollywood stars such as

gathered on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood during the Oscars red carpet to call for a ceasefire.

They waved Palestinian flags and chanted slogans such as

"Free Palestine, free"

and "As you watch, bombs are falling."

It is not the first time that activism has been felt in the awards season this year.

On February 25, a pro-Palestinian protest disrupted the Independent Spirit Awards, which were held in a tent near Santa Monica Beach.
