After the serious accident in Berlin-Mitte, the four-year-old child died in hospital on Saturday evening.

The police told the dpa news agency this morning.

The mother had already died beforehand.

According to initial findings on Saturday, the woman and child were hit by an 83-year-old on Leipziger Strasse.

The man was also taken to the hospital.

A police spokeswoman said he was released after outpatient treatment and a blood sample.

The exact cause of the accident is still being determined.

On Saturday, the police had already announced that the woman's partner and sister had been taken to hospital with shock.

All four were in Berlin as tourists.

A number of witnesses and first responders had to be looked after by emergency services, including an emergency chaplain.

The fire department was on site with 48 emergency services.
