Charles Spencer describes his difficult childhood

Princess Diana's brother, Charles Spencer, says he was sexually abused by a staff member at boarding school when he was eleven.

This emerges from an excerpt from a memoir, “A Very Private School,” published in the Mail on Sunday.

The now 59-year-old Earl Spencer describes in detail how he was beaten and the victim of sexual assault at Maidwell Hall boarding school.

The employee took advantage of the fact that he and other boys were desperate for female attention and affection, Spencer said.

When he feared that she might leave school, he reacted with self-harming behavior.

Spencer, who works as a journalist, is best remembered for his sharp criticism of the royal family at his sister's memorial service.

Diana died in a car accident in Paris in 1997.

She is buried in the grounds of the Spencer's mansion, Althorp House, in Northamptonshire, central England.
