A historic sailing ship sank in Lübeck harbor.

An acquaintance of the ship's owner noticed that the large sailing ship "Fridthjof" lying in the Stadttrave was full of water early on Saturday morning and alerted the fire department, as a spokesman for the fire department said on Saturday in Lübeck.

The emergency services then immediately prepared the equipment for pumping the water out of the ship's hull.

But before the pumps could be used, the historic all-wooden ship lying near the lift bridge sank.

“It happened much faster than expected,” said the fire department spokesman.

No people were missing.

However, the owner of the ship and his acquaintance later said that there could have been a dog on board.

At that point it was already clearly too late for a rescue operation, said the spokesman.

That's why divers didn't go into the water.

There may have been a dog on board

"It makes no sense to endanger human lives to rescue a dead dog." If the emergency services had known about the missing dog when they arrived, "we would have initiated a rescue immediately." Whether the animal was actually on board when the sailor sank was initially unclear.

Smaller quantities of operating materials were leaked.

The fire brigade therefore placed oil barriers around the sunken boat so that the water would not be further polluted.

The Lower Water Authority will order the ship owner to have the sailor properly secured and salvaged.

The ship in need of repair is a galleass built in 1881 that was used as a sealer and whaler in the north.

According to the fire department, the two-master, which was previously moored in the museum harbor and was recently berthed a few hundred meters away, belongs to a private individual.
