Three weeks after the death of Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny, unknown people in Hamburg renamed a street at the Russian General Hospital, which has been closed since the beginning of the year, in his honor - at least briefly.

The activists stuck long blue stickers with white letters on several street signs with the name “Am Feenteich”.

It says “Alexei Nalwalnystr.”

From a distance, the difference to official street name signs can hardly be seen.

No crime, say the police

Sticking on official street signs is only a criminal offense if the sticker cannot be removed without leaving any residue, as a police spokesman said on Saturday.

The “Hamburger Morgenpost” had previously reported.

Fresh flowers and photos of Navalny also lay and hung in front of the closed Consulate General of the Russian Federation at the fairy pond on Saturday.

Navalny, who was considered Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin's harshest critic, died on February 16 in a prison camp north of the Arctic Circle under circumstances that were initially unclear.

The death of Navalny, who returned to Russia in 2021 after a poison attack despite the threat of imprisonment, caused international consternation.

Many accused Putin and his justice system of political murder.
