A cardboard box apparently exploded on a sidewalk in Ochtrup, Münsterland, seriously injuring a man.
The 58-year-old was taken to a hospital in a rescue helicopter, said the police and the public prosecutor in Münster.
The police are investigating an attempted homicide and have set up a murder squad.
According to initial findings, the 58-year-old stepped out of one of the nearby houses onto the street early in the morning.
As he approached the box on the sidewalk, it exploded.
What was in the box is still unclear.
The police are looking for witnesses who saw who put the box down.
