King

Felipe and Queen Letizia

have fulfilled the tradition of inaugurating

ARCO

, the Madrid Contemporary Art Fair, which this year celebrates its 43rd edition.

The exhibition, located in pavilion 9 of Ifema, takes as its leitmotiv the creation of the Caribbean diaspora while reinforcing its bridge with Latin America.

And they have explained that to the Monarch and his wife during the tour, in which, as in previous editions,

they have stopped at the EL MUNDO and

La Lectura

stand .

There, the artist

Guillermo Fornes

has conceived an open-plan exhibition space composed of seven large-format canvases and an LED screen where the expression of visitors is projected, captured in real time by several robotic cameras.

Commissioned by Rafael Sierra, the artist has been

inspired by the universe of

Fritz Lang's

Metropolis

to convert those images into a black and white film scene with a retrofuturistic aesthetic.

Thus, from a production booth, six people work to reproduce the images of the visitors and incorporate them into the ecosystem of the creative process, developing one of their ephemeral

land art

proposals by composing with the filming and projection of the emotional reaction of the public.

The Kings learned about this installation from the artist himself, who was waiting for them at the stand along with several members of the newspaper.

They have been received by the

director of EL MUNDO, Joaquín Manso

, and the deputy director of EL MUNDO and head of

Papel

y

La Lectura

, Gonzálo Suárez.

The Kings also greeted Marco Pompignoli, president of Unidad Editorial, and Laura Múgica, general director and advisor of the publishing group, as well as Sergio Cobos, director of Advertising.

Between March 6 and 10, Madrid stands as the international capital of art, with 205 galleries from 36 countries present at the fair.

Don Felipe and Doña Letizia toured 15 stands at the Fair for an hour.

As every year, the entourage that accompanied them was very large.

The Minister of Culture,

Ernest Urtasun,

was present ;

the president of the Madrid Assembly,

Enrique Ossorio

;

the mayor of the capital,

José Luis Martínez-Almeida

;

or the general director of IFEMA MADRID,

Juan Arrizabalaga

.

The Kings have met at the exhibition with some well-known faces, such as

Carmen Lomana, Alaska and Mario Vaquerizo or the artist Rachel Valdes

The attendees on this first day were curious about the presence of the Kings, many were recording and others shyly shouted cheers or applauded.

The most compelling was at the end of the tour, when they greeted the soul of Arco,

Juana de Aizpuru

, founder of the Fair, who for the first time, at 90 years old, is not present with her gallery.

"The Kings have encouraged me a lot, because I am very sad to close my gallery, I never thought that could happen," she later confessed to EL MUNDO.

As always, the Monarch and his wife got to know the galleries that are exhibiting at the international fair for the first time.

They were at the Remota stand, an art gallery in the city of Salta, in the north of Argentina, which disseminates local art production to the world, which is varied and complex and contributes to local cultural development with exhibitions in the gallery.

Also in the Murcian Espacio Mínimo and in the exhibition by Sonia Navarro, who throughout her career has been creating works that challenge and confront the mechanisms of power and its institutions, especially those that have contributed to the establishment of a hierarchy between genders, relating women to domestic work and the impossibility of mobility, reflecting on women's constant struggle against established social conventions.

They did not miss out on greeting the historic

Helga de Alvear

.

The Kings inaugurated her Extremaduran museum and last year another exhibition of the collection of this patron of contemporary art on her state trip to Germany.

An hour after their arrival at ARCO, and after the tribute to Aizpuru, Don Felipe and Doña Letizia left, this time, accompanied by a standing ovation.
