The scene was once voted Britain's most memorable television moment: As Mr Darcy, actor Colin Firth in the BBC television adaptation of "Pride and Prejudice" goes swimming in a castle pond at the request of his great love Elizabeth Bennet alias Jennifer Ehle and presents his muscular upper body covered with a soaking wet shirt.

In 2013, a gigantic Colin Firth statue was erected at short notice in the middle of Hyde Park's Serpentine Lake.

Now the costume that Firth wore in the legendary scene in 1995 has been auctioned off - for 25,000 British pounds, around 29,250 euros.

In addition to the linen shirt, the costume includes a pair of boots, riding trousers and a velvet vest.

Even the auction house had not expected the sum offered: it had expected a maximum of 10,000 British pounds.

Almost 47,000 euros for a ball gown from Madonna

Other costumes that went under the hammer included a Christian Dior ball gown from the 1950s that Madonna wore in the 1996 film "Evita."

It was auctioned for 40,000 British pounds.

Johnny Depp's costume for Ichabod Crane in Sleepy Hollow fetched £24,000.

Proceeds from the auction will benefit the Bright Foundation, an arts education charity founded by John Bright, an Academy Award-winning costume designer.

He owns the costume rental company Cosprop, which owned the items now being auctioned off.
