Frauennerfling: “Deliciously culinary”

We know the format: In a rustic kitchen, a television chef prepares specialties from the region and, if possible, speaks a strong dialect: This is what happened in the program “Lower Austria Today” last week.

An innkeeper from the town of Haslau prepared minced laberl, i.e. meatballs - with fish from the nearby Danube.

There were also potatoes in a rich sauce, salad and a glass of white wine.

However, the program was obviously not well received by all viewers - because the broadcasting ORF felt compelled to apologize on Tuesday.

»Last week we cooked up a delicious fish, the so-called Frauennerfling.

But it is protected all year round, and we apologize for that.

We had different information about this,” said presenter Claudia Schubert at the end of the program.

Numerous Austrian media reports on the faux pas.

It is therefore still unclear how the species of fish got into the television kitchen.

The female nerfling is listed on the Austrian Red List of Endangered Species and is listed as protected all year round in numerous state fishing regulations in the country.
