A Spanish-Brazilian tourist who, according to current investigations, was the victim of gang rape in India has received compensation of one million rupees (around 11,000 euros).

The local police handed over a corresponding check to the video blogger's life and travel partner in front of reporters, as a video from the Indian news agency ANI shows.

Victims of sexual crimes in India have the right to financial compensation.

Several suspects were arrested after the crime last Friday.

According to India Today, these are three of the seven suspected perpetrators.

A court is expected to hear the case as early as this week - which is unusually quick in India when it comes to rape.

The court said: "A sexual offense against a foreigner is likely to bring negative publicity to the country and thereby affect India's image in the world." There is also a risk that tourism will be damaged.

The couple reported in a now-deleted video on Instagram that they were beaten and the woman was raped by seven men.

According to authorities, the crime happened in the state of Jharkhand when the two travelers spent the night in a tent.

The police then took her to a hospital, where medical tests confirmed rape.

The two have been traveling around the world on their motorcycles for several years and share their experiences with their more than 240,000 followers.

In India – the world's most populous country with 1.4 billion inhabitants – an average of 86 women and girls are raped every day, according to official figures.

These numbers refer to the year 2021. There are also other victims who never go to the police.

Many Indian women remain silent about such experiences.

According to women's rights activists, the problem lies in the patriarchal society.

They also accuse the police and the justice system of not taking victims of sexual violence seriously enough.

Many cases remain lying around for years and convictions are rare.

Only a few cases receive a lot of attention – like the case of the tourist.
