Five more suspects have been arrested in India following the alleged gang rape of a Brazilian-Spanish tourist.

The Indian news agency PTI circulated footage of the suspects being handcuffed and tied with a rope.

This brought the number of arrests in the case to eight, she reported, citing the police.

The woman, who was traveling through India with her husband on a motorcycle, was raped by several men on Friday evening while camping in the Dumka district of the eastern Indian state of Jharkand, according to police.

Several media outlets, including the broadcaster NDTV, reported that the authorities had now paid the couple compensation worth the equivalent of 11,000 euros.

In India – the world's most populous country with 1.4 billion inhabitants – an average of 86 women and girls are raped every day, according to official figures.

These numbers refer to the year 2021. There are also other victims who never go to the police.

Many Indian women remain silent about such experiences.

According to women's rights activists, the problem lies in the patriarchal society.

They also accuse the police and the justice system of not taking victims of sexual violence seriously enough.

Many cases remain lying around for years and convictions are rare.

Only a few cases receive a lot of attention – like the case of the tourist.
