Four people were injured in a house fire in the Friedrichshain district of Berlin.

When the emergency services arrived on Saturday night, they found a "dramatic situation," as a fire department spokesman said.

More than ten people called for help.

With so-called fire escape hoods over their faces, the emergency services rescued 16 people from the house.

Four people were taken to hospital, in one case with serious injuries.

According to initial information, the rescue workers looked after around 26 people on site to check whether they needed further treatment.

Since it was cold outside, a tram was cleared and used for the investigations.

According to the fire department spokesman, the fire that broke out on the ground floor for reasons that are still unclear was quickly extinguished.

The bigger problem was the smoke.

A total of around 110 emergency services were on site.
