  Sun Jun was born in Suzhou City, Jiangsu Province on October 3, 1926. He graduated from the Structural Group of the Department of Civil Engineering of Shanghai Jiao Tong University in June 1949 and taught at Tongji University after the nationwide restructuring of departments in September 1952.

He once served as a member of the School Committee of Tongji University, deputy chairman of the academic committee, provost, director of the Department of Structural Engineering, and honorary director of the Department of Underground Construction and Engineering. He also served as a fellow of the International Society of Rock Mechanics, vice president of the International Society of Rock Mechanics and the Chinese National Chairman of the group, chairman of the Chinese Society of Rock Mechanics and Engineering, vice chairman of the China Civil Engineering Society, convener of the Civil Engineering Discipline Evaluation Group of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, leader of the Civil Engineering Discipline Group of the National Postdoctoral Expert Committee, and convener of the Civil Engineering Discipline Evaluation Group of the National Natural Science Foundation of China people.

In 1991, he was elected as a member/academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (Ministry of Technical Sciences).

  "The teachings will be remembered forever, the style will last forever, and the role model will last forever!" "A true gentleman, we will miss you forever!"... Tongji teachers and students expressed their deep remembrance and heartfelt admiration to this respectable Tongji scholar. .

  "Mr. Sun Jun is an outstanding representative of Tongji professors and the inheritor, practitioner and disseminator of Tongji spirit and culture. Mr. Sun Jun not only tirelessly explores scientific truth, but also insists on hard work and practice to promote the close integration of theory and practice. We have achieved outstanding achievements. We must learn and inherit Mr. Sun Jun’s distinctive spirit of educator and scientist, unite and work hard, serve the country with science and education, and make greater contributions to the construction of a strong country and national rejuvenation as Tongji people." said Fang Shouen, Secretary of the Party Committee of Tongji University.

  Sun Jun has long been engaged in teaching, scientific research and engineering practice in the fields of geomechanics and engineering, tunnels and underground engineering. He has extensive experience in geotechnical rheology, viscoelastic plasticity theory of underground structures, seismic and explosion-resistant dynamics of underground protection projects, and urban environmental geoengineering. He has profound academic attainments and made outstanding contributions in theory and application.

Participated in the research and construction consulting of a large number of national major engineering projects, and won many national, provincial and ministerial awards.

He is rigorous in his studies, has noble ethics as a teacher, is pioneering and selfless, and is a teacher and life model that Tongji people will always miss.

  Sun Jun often warned his disciples: "Never say too old and too late to learn and to do." He once said with a smile to a student who was nearly fifty years old: "In life, You are just starting out in your forties, and you are not yet 10 years old this year." As an octogenarian, he always considers himself to be in his prime. "For decades, I have worked hard and asked myself not to slack off even a day."

  In recent years, Sun Jun has paid close attention to new energy-saving and environmentally friendly technologies in tunnels and underground engineering, and has continuously expanded into new research areas.

At the academic seminar, Sun Jun introduced to young disciples the new trends in the future development of the engineering field, which are the risk prediction and forecasting of artificial intelligence, big data, cloud computing, information and network technologies in civil engineering design, construction and operation, The development and innovation of various sub-disciplines such as image and video display and analysis, structural deformation control and special program software development.

He earnestly warned young people: “We can use artificial intelligence technology to discover key targets in engineering design and construction, design and optimize new and more creative civil structures, pre-control unexpected investment and construction risks, and effectively make up for the inefficiencies in traditional technology research and development. The current shortcomings and existing problems in China include large investment, low efficiency, long cycle, and slow transformation of results." These remarks deeply impressed the younger generations present.

  Sun Jun once expressed his thoughts on his academic career in his later years:

  When the frost on the temples is gone, the old man will know how difficult it is to face;

  When enjoying the sea of science, one forgets honor and disgrace, and there is always no time to spare in thinking and searching.

  Mr. Sun Jun’s farewell ceremony is scheduled to be held at 9:30 a.m. on March 7, 2024, in Hall 1 of Shanghai Longhua Funeral Home.
