One day after a fatal knife attack in Gummersbach, North Rhine-Westphalia, the 21-year-old suspect turned himself in to the police at a police station.

He was temporarily arrested and should be brought before an investigating judge on the same day, the police said.

Extensive investigations had previously led to the identification of the 21-year-old, it was said.

On Thursday there was a dispute within the local drinking scene, and a 24-year-old man was stabbed at the city's bus station in the Oberberg district.

The man now arrested is said to have attacked the victim with a sharp object.

Despite immediate attempts at resuscitation, the 24-year-old succumbed to his serious injuries at the scene.

A murder squad is investigating.

The public prosecutor's office will apply for an arrest warrant for murder with the characteristic of treachery, the police said in a statement.
