Cinema successes that can finally be seen online, TV classics that are getting a new season: every month we summarize which new series and films
can be seen
on Netflix and Co. as well as in the media libraries.
The streaming schedule for March:
What is currently worth it
Remakes as far as the eye can see.
While Warner Bros. has officially set the start of the Harry Potter series for 2026, the most-watched Netflix series is currently the remake of “Avatar – The Lord of the Elements” – a US animated hit from the noughties.
In many cases, new productions of old box office hits are an attempt to make a lot of money - without taking the risk of a new idea flopping.
But even remake cynics (like the author of this text) can sometimes be proved wrong.
That's when multi-talented Donald Glover, together with showrunner Francesca Sloane, takes the outdated Brangelina action film "
Mr. and Mrs. Smith
" out of its mothballs and gives it a completely new look.
As a series, in gentle.
While the original film from 2005 uses retort-like action and gender clichés, Donald Glover and Maya Eskin, as a couple of agents, experience a modern heroic story - and a modern relationship, with all its ups and downs.
Colleague Oliver Kaever rightly describes it as a “tender, disarming, intimate eight-part comedy.”
But it can't always remain escapism.
By far the most shocking films from last month include the documentary “
20 Days in Mariupol
,” which has been showing in the ARD media library since mid-February.
Filmmaker and Pulitzer Prize winner Mstyslaw Chernov, producer Vasilisa Stepanenko and photographer Evgeniy Maloletka decided to stay in Ukraine in 2022 at the start of the Russian invasion.
There they captured crucial moments of the war: the bombing of a maternity hospital, the creation of mass graves, a lot of cruelty and suffering.
It's hard to watch this documentary.
And yet that is exactly what is so important.
“20 Days in Mariupol” is nominated for best documentary at the Oscars in March.
Many of the nominees, such as “The Holdovers” or “The Zone of Interest,” are just now being shown in German cinemas.
“Oppenheimer” and “Barbie” on Wow as well as “Killers of the Flower Moon” and “Maestro” on Netflix are already available to stream.
