A few days ago, in Benin, a video showing a man on his roof, refusing to leave his building, before its demolition planned by the public authorities was making the rounds on social networks.

In total, since 2017, nearly 10,000 residents of the riverside areas of Cotonou have faced forced evictions since 2017 according to an Amnesty International report.

These evictions, linked to government projects to develop seaside and memorial tourism, would today have dramatic consequences for the evicted residents.

Example in the Fiyégnon 1 district, where nearly 3,000 people were evicted from their homes in 2021. But many were not rehoused...
