The Berlin SPD politician Sawsan Chebli was awarded 5,000 euros in compensation by the Berlin regional court because of an online hate comment.

A court spokeswoman said this on Thursday upon request.

Chebli previously wrote on the online platform X: “Sued and won!”

The money will go to the HateAid organization, said the former Berlin State Secretary.

The non-profit organization supported the process.

According to the information, the judgment of January 16th is not yet legally binding (ref.: 27 O 343/22).

The SPD politician had sued because of an online comment from 2021.

It said that Chebli should be “disposed of, in the words of Alexander Gauland.”

From the regional court's point of view, this is "shameful criticism that encroaches on the plaintiff's dignity."

Her personal rights have been violated, so she is entitled to compensation.

In addition, the author must bear the legal fees and court costs.

The managing director of HateAid, Josephine Ballon, explained: The regional court clearly states “the right-wing radical nature of the statements” and makes it clear “that the spread of deportation fantasies means a violation of human dignity.”

However, she regretted that it took a year and a half for the verdict.

Chebli is often the target of hostility and death threats online.

Regarding the verdict, she said: »At a time when deportation and remigration are being discussed publicly, the court's clear words are more important than ever.

I’ll keep being loud.”
