In 2022, a 43-year-old man died after being restrained for a long time in the detention center of Okazaki Police Station in Aichi Prefecture, and prosecutors have ordered a 46-year-old former police inspector who was involved in the detention management to be arrested for work. A summary indictment was filed for manslaughter.

On the other hand, no charges were filed against eight other police officers at the time.

In December 2022, a 43-year-old man who had been arrested and detained on suspicion of obstructing official duties died of kidney failure in the custody cell of Okazaki Police Station in Aichi Prefecture.

The man was detained for more than 100 consecutive hours with belt-type handcuffs and ropes due to his violent behavior, and the Aichi Prefectural Police Headquarters sent papers to the nine police officers who were involved in the detention management at the time.

As a result of the investigation, prosecutors found that the 46-year-old former police inspector was supposed to be under strict surveillance and have him examined by a doctor, but instead they left him in a protection room and suffered from acute renal failure due to dehydration. A summary indictment was filed on suspicion of causing death due to professional negligence.

The man did not eat or drink for approximately 55 hours while in custody.

On the other hand, eight other people who had been referred to prosecutors on suspicion of assaulting and abusing a special public servant, including kicking a man, and creating a falsely stamped official document that produced a false report, were not prosecuted.

Prosecutors have not disclosed the reason for not indicting the case.

The Aichi Prefectural Police Headquarters said they were not in a position to comment on the prosecution's disposition, but said, ``We take this incident very seriously, and the entire organization will work together to prevent it from happening again.''

the father of the deceased man

Regarding the fact that one person involved in the detention management was summarily indicted, but eight others were not indicted, the father of the deceased man, who is in his 70s, said in an interview with NHK, ``I was stunned. What was going on behind the scenes?'' I feel like the police and prosecutors are the same organization, because they don't know if they are doing anything, and they just try to protect themselves as an organization.Even now, I see my son's face in my dreams, and I realize that I have no choice but to carry his burden for the rest of my life. I think that the current situation will not change no matter what regulations are put in place,'' he said.
