Furthermore, the government announced its policy to establish a new storage facility on the nuclear power plant site to temporarily store spent nuclear fuel.



The new facility uses a method called ``dry storage,'' in which nuclear fuel is cooled with air in a metal container that shields it from radiation.Two buildings have been installed this time, with the aim of starting operations for the first building in 2028, four years later. Masu.



Installation requires the consent of the prefecture, as well as the town of Onagawa and the city of Ishinomaki, where the nuclear power plant is located, and Tohoku Electric Power plans to apply for review to the national government on the 28th and then begin discussions with the local government.

Tohoku Electric Power's General Manager Aoki said, ``We recognize that dry storage facilities are basically safe facilities, but we would like to thoroughly explain them to prefectural and local residents by visiting every house.''



Storage of spent nuclear fuel is a national issue, and dry storage facilities similar to this one are planned to be installed at the nuclear power plants of Kyushu Electric Power, Shikoku Electric Power, Chubu Electric Power, and Kansai Electric Power.
