The essentials of the day before

  • A Hamas official said Friday that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's post-war Gaza plan "will never succeed" during a press conference in Beirut.

“The reality of Gaza and the reality of the Palestinians can only be determined by the Palestinians themselves,” he added.

  • US Secretary of State Antony Blinken reaffirmed that the United States opposes any "reoccupation" of Gaza once the war ends.

“There must be no Israeli reoccupation of Gaza” and the “territory of Gaza must not be reduced,” he stressed, “basic principles” according to him for the future of Gaza.

  • The Israeli army bombed the south of the Gaza Strip overnight, residents of the small Palestinian territory where the humanitarian situation is desperate reported Friday, while an Israeli delegation led by the head of the Mossad went to Paris for new talks for a truce.

  • The objective of the "delicate" mission of the independent group on the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) is to allow donors to "regain confidence", Catherine Colonna said at a press conference, the former French Minister of Foreign Affairs, who chairs the mission.

The agency has been at the center of controversy since Israel accused 12 of its employees of involvement in the October 7 attack carried out by the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas.

Please note: the number of victims is provided by the Hamas-led Gaza Ministry of Health.

The ministry collects information provided by hospitals in the enclave and by the Palestinian Red Crescent.

The Gaza Health Ministry does not indicate how the Palestinians were killed, whether by Israeli airstrikes and/or barrages or failed Palestinian rocket attacks.

It describes all victims as victims of "Israeli aggression" and also does not distinguish between civilians and combatants.

During the four wars and numerous skirmishes between Israel and Hamas, United Nations agencies regularly cited Health Ministry figures in their reports.

The International Committee of the Red Cross and the Palestinian Red Crescent also use these figures.

In the aftermath of previous episodes of war, the United Nations Humanitarian Office published casualty figures based on its own research into medical records.

The UN figures largely agree with those of the Gaza Ministry of Health, with a few differences.
