The bunker on the cliffs in the Niehagen district of Ahrenshoop was considered a popular excursion destination. Now he has fallen into the depths. According to Mayor Benjamin Heinke, the landslide occurred on Sunday night or early Sunday morning.

The CDU politician published photos of the collapsed bunker complex in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania on Facebook. "In the next step, we will discuss with the responsible authorities whether and how the bunker complex that is now on the beach needs to be dealt with," he wrote.

Just two weeks ago, the Environment Ministry in Schwerin warned of dangerous landslides on slopes due to wet and soggy ground. The risk of collapses and landslides on the cliffs is currently particularly high. »That's why I ask all citizens and guests of this country to stay away from the cliffs and to avoid walking on the beach. So-called cliff edges can also form on dunes,” said State Environment Minister Till Backhaus (SPD).

According to NDR, the bunker complex was built in the late 1950s during the Cold War. The GDR's National People's Army had stationed an observation company there. Parts of the complex have been on the beach and in the water for many years, it was said. According to a report in the “Ostsee-Zeitung,” Mayor Heinek had long feared that the bunker could slide.
