The carnival in Venlo was overshadowed by a fatal accident. A 45-year-old man died in the Dutch city when he became trapped on a carnival float that backed into an hall.

According to the police, the accident in the city on the border with North Rhine-Westphalia occurred while the car was parking. Rescue workers arrived and a helicopter was also used. But they were unable to revive the man. The tractor driver who wanted to maneuver the carnival float into the hall was temporarily arrested.

As the broadcaster 1Limburg reported, the accident victim belonged to the Elferrat in the neighboring town of Tegelen. The man was standing on the car with other members of the carnival club and may have bent down too late when he rolled the car into the hall where it was supposed to be parked at the end of the carnival.

The police are investigating.
