In Asahi City, Chiba Prefecture, which was severely damaged by the tsunami caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake, local children and others planted black pine saplings in an effort to regenerate protected forests along the coast.

Asahi City, Chiba Prefecture had a protected forest along the coast covering 86 hectares, but it was damaged by the tsunami caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake 13 years ago.

The children planted black pine saplings at 2-meter intervals under the guidance of a person in charge of the landscaping company contracted to manage the protected forest.

250 seedlings have been prepared, and if they are nurtured properly, they will grow to about 2 meters in about 10 to 15 years.

A man who participated for the first time said, ``I didn't know much about pine forests, so this was an opportunity to learn more.I hope that through this experience I can connect with the wisdom of our predecessors.''

Another woman who participates every year said, ``Every year we do it differently, but I think we did well.''

Katsunori Ikeda, manager of the Asahi City Agriculture and Fisheries Division, said, ``The effects of the forest as a protected forest will be seen in five to 10 years. We hope that carrying out conservation activities in our own area will lead not only to memories but also to a love for our hometown.''
