The giant salamander is commonly known as the giant salamander because its cry resembles the cry of a child. It is a national second-level protected wild animal.

  At 13:5 on the same day, the Yudong Police Station of the Zhaoyang District Public Security Bureau of Zhaotong City received a call from Mr. Li saying that a giant salamander crawled onto the road about 100 meters away from the waters of the Yudong Reservoir.   "This salamander is about 1 meter long and weighs about 15 kilograms. It is the largest salamander I have ever seen." Qiu Kunzhi, a member of the Zhaotong Yudong Reservoir Administration Bureau who participated in the rescue work, said that the Yudong Reservoir has a storage capacity of 364 million cubic meters. He has worked in the reservoir for 14 years. In recent years, with the continuous improvement of water quality and the increasing public awareness of protecting wildlife, salamanders have appeared in the reservoir many times, including a salamander that came ashore for a "walk" in 2022.
