They feed on aquatic insects, fish, crabs, shrimps, frogs, etc. It is the largest among amphibians, with a total length of more than 1 meter in adulthood. The giant salamander is commonly known as the giant salamander because its cry resembles the cry of a child. It is a national second-level protected wild animal.

Qiu Kunzhi, a member of the Zhaotong Yudong Reservoir Administration Bureau who participated in the rescue work, said that the Yudong Reservoir has a storage capacity of 364 million cubic meters. He has worked in the reservoir for 14 years. In recent years, with the continuous improvement of water quality and the increasing public awareness of protecting wildlife, salamanders have appeared in the reservoir many times, including a salamander that came ashore for a "walk" in 2022.
