Two people died and another was seriously injured in a prefabricated building in Leipzig on Friday night after a fire.

The fire broke out in an apartment around 3 a.m. for an unknown reason, the police said. Because of the heavy smoke, all residents of the apartment building had to leave the building.

The identity of the victims is still unclear

After extinguishing the fire, the emergency services discovered two lifeless people in the apartment where the fire broke out. “Despite immediate rescue measures, any help came too late for them,” said a police spokeswoman. The public prosecutor's office has taken over the investigation.

A spokesman for the Leipzig public prosecutor's office said upon request that no more precise information could be given about the exact state of health of the third, seriously injured person. The identity, gender and age of the victims are also still unclear. An autopsy was carried out and the first results are not expected until next week at the earliest. A fire investigator is at the scene.
