At the research nuclear reactor "Fugen" in Tsuruga City, Fukui Prefecture, where decommissioning work is underway, a fire broke out in a power distribution board inside the building on the morning of the 16th and was quickly extinguished. The Japan Atomic Energy Agency is investigating the cause, as there were no injuries and there was no radioactivity impact on the outside world.

According to the Japan Atomic Energy Agency, at around 11:40 a.m. on the 16th, a worker in the Fugen turbine building was attempting to turn off the power to the lighting equipment switchboard, when he noticed a fire starting. Staff rushed to the scene and extinguished the fire with a fire extinguisher.

There were no injuries, and there were no abnormalities in the values at the monitoring posts that measure radiation levels, so it is assumed that there is no impact of radiation on the outside world.

Decommissioning work has been underway at Fugen since 2008, and dismantled pipes and other items were stored in this building, so the Japan Atomic Energy Agency is conducting a detailed investigation into the circumstances and cause of the fire.

In Tsuruga City, on February 8, smoke and sparks were detected from an exhaust fan inside the Japan Atomic Power Company's Tsuruga Nuclear Power Plant Unit 1, which is adjacent to the Fugen site and is also undergoing decommissioning work. There was a fire going on.
