China News Service, Hangzhou, February 15th (Guo Tianqi) During the Spring Festival, busyness and running around are "suspended" and replaced by leisure and reunion. However, in the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine of Zhongshan Hospital of Zhejiang Province, the "pause button" cannot be pressed during this New Year: critically ill rehabilitation patients persist in treatment and training in order to overcome difficulties and improve functional impairments, and medical staff in order to ensure the safety of patients and help patients scientifically Training still sticks to the job. The "persistence" and "perseverance" in the New Year together "illuminate" the road to recovery for patients, and also let patients know that in the long recovery process, they never walk alone.

Accompanying patients to spend the New Year holiday in the ward

Although it is the Chinese New Year holiday, the medical staff of the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine are still busy in various wards. Wang Guoai, deputy chief physician of the Second Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, Zhongshan Hospital, Zhejiang Province, said: "The patients here are mainly cardiopulmonary rehabilitation and severe rehabilitation. They still need to stay in the hospital for rehabilitation during the Spring Festival. For example, most of the patients in our ward are tracheostomy patients. They need professional equipment to maintain life, so almost all patients in this ward spend the Spring Festival in the hospital."

Unlike ICU patients, critically ill patients in the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine have overcome the first life and death hurdle, but they and medical staff will still face many difficulties on the long road to recovery.

"A few days ago, a patient with a tracheotomy suddenly became cyanotic, had obvious shortness of breath, and his blood oxygen saturation suddenly dropped to about 70%. The situation was very critical. After examination, the doctor on duty found that the patient's metal cannula was displaced and clinging to the trachea. The wall caused the airway to be blocked and sputum could not be aspirated. The medical staff at the scene made a prompt decision and put a plastic cannula on the patient to aspirate the sputum out, saving the patient's life." Wang Guoai said.

In order to deal with such critical situations, Wang Guoai and his colleagues had to take turns on duty to ensure sufficient medical care. They also accompanied the patients in the ward during the New Year holiday.

"There is always someone on duty during the Chinese New Year. These patients need our care. Even if they rest, we will feel uneasy about them." Wang Guoai said.

The long road to recovery from quantitative change to qualitative change

During the Chinese New Year, Wang Guoai's work is not much different from his daily life. In addition to rescuing critically ill patients, he also needs to cooperate with the rehabilitation team to formulate detailed rehabilitation plans for the patients and make assessments and predictions based on the patients' subsequent recovery.

Wang Guoai said that recovery is a long process from quantitative change to qualitative change. "We can see little by little changes in the patients. Being able to blink and move hands is a gratifying progress. After several months of recovery, the patient went from being critically ill to having all the tubes removed from his body. This is a huge achievement. Progress is like nurturing life and waiting for flowers to bloom.”

Although it is the Spring Festival holiday, for many patients, rehabilitation training cannot be wasted even a day. "For a stroke patient, the first three months of treatment after the onset of the disease are the golden recovery period. If the Chinese New Year is missed during the three months, the patient may become inert and miss the best time for recovery." Wang Guoai said .

In the view of Wang Guoai and other medical staff, every small progress of the patient is worthy of joy. A little progress every day means that the patient is one step closer to the next "qualitative change". In the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, there are many "miracles of life" from critical illness and functional failure to tube removal and escape from danger.

"At first we really thought it couldn't be cured, but under the care of doctors and nurses, his liver and lung functions are now normal, and we also see hope that he can return to a normal life." A man suffering from motor neuron disease Uncle Lin's wife said.

Multiple efforts are made to safeguard the results of rehabilitation

"My mobile phone is on 24 hours a day and is always on standby. Even if I am not in the hospital, I will check the patient's test results on my mobile phone to fully understand the patient's recovery status," Wang Guoai said.

The progress of patients is hard-won, and protecting the results of recovery is a test for patients and medical staff. "The vast majority of patients do not have a clear concept of rehabilitation, which requires the company and supervision of medical staff and family members. Over time, obvious changes can be seen. Some patients cannot control the degree of training and medication after returning home. , which will make all previous efforts in vain." Wang Guoai said. This is also the reason why the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine will not stop working during the Spring Festival to "stand guard" for life and "keep watch" for patients.

The recovery of patients requires the joint efforts of many parties. Rehabilitation therapist Pan Bin said that the hospital implements 24-hour management for patients with high early recovery requirements. There will be a rehabilitation team composed of rehabilitation doctors, rehabilitation therapists, nursing staff and other medical staff. Together with family members and caregivers, we help patients with rehabilitation.

In addition to medical staff and family members, the efforts and persistence of patients themselves are also essential. "Unlike other treatments, rehabilitation treatment requires patients to actively participate and actively complete the tasks assigned by the rehabilitation therapist. With increased initiative, the rehabilitation effect will be better," Pan Bin said.

During the Spring Festival, the medical staff of the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine filmed New Year greeting videos for the patients recovering in the hospital and prepared small New Year gifts. In this heart-warming way, they sent blessings and encouragement to the patients who persisted in recovery. Rehabilitation training in each ward is still carried out in an orderly manner. On the long road to recovery, the story of "persistence" and "persistence" continues. (over)
