“Intense snow is forecast throughout today and precipitation amounts of around 10mm. This is at least 20% of the norm. The height of the snow has already increased by 4 cm. The height of the snowdrifts has reached 54 cm. By tomorrow morning, snowdrifts of 60 cm in Moscow are likely,” he said.

The forecaster noted that the intensity of the snow is associated with a rare combination of pressure zones.

“Now there is a well-defined cyclone to the west, to the center of European Russia, and an anticyclone to the east. The result was a rare combination: high pressure, low temperature and intense snow. This is connected specifically with the front section. Moreover, wind gusts up to 11 m/s. Over the last hour, 2 mm of snow fell in Moscow. This is a lot,” Vilfand concluded.

Earlier, the chief specialist of the Meteonovosti news agency, Tatyana Pozdnyakova, made a weather forecast in the capital region in March.
