All 72 clubs in the league association below the Premier League are taking part: rainbow balls will be used in the English Football League (EFL) games between February 16th and 24th. These symbolized "that football is for everyone," said the EFL on the occasion of "LGBT History Month," and the campaign stood "for the league's active support for inclusion in the game."

For every goal scored with the rainbow ball, the sporting goods giant Puma, as the manufacturer of the ball, donates to a fund that finances LGBTQ+ projects. These include, among other things, initiatives to raise awareness of the issue of inclusion in football and events to promote diversity.

“The league is proud to be involved in this historic first for English football,” said EFL boss Trevor Birch: “We want the Rainbow Ball to be a catalyst for conversation and raise awareness and understanding of the issues facing LGBTQ+ people. Community increases as we work to make football truly inclusive and representative of society.«
