Former “Telemoritz” television tower in Hanover: notice of demolition filed

Hanover's striking old television tower, also known as "Telemoritz," may be facing demolition. The so-called demolition notice was submitted to the construction department of the state capital Hanover on February 8th, said Josef Baumert from the brand board for production and logistics at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles on Wednesday: "The decision was not an easy one for us." According to a report from 2023, the stability was " “borderline”. The 141 meter high and around 65 year old “Telemoritz” with the VW advertising has belonged to the car manufacturer since 2000.
If the tower is to be retained, a fundamental renovation will be necessary in the next few months - this would require investments in the double-digit million range. The tower is not designed for possible public use, for example as a restaurant, so that is “not an option for us,” said Baumert. Nevertheless, the manufacturer would support a viable concept of alternative use. Every offer is checked. The demolition is being seriously prepared and the advertising will be dismantled this year.
In 2020, a chunk of concrete the size of a brick came loose from the tower about 70 meters high. Nobody got hurt. Since then, industrial climbers have repeatedly been seen checking the facade of the old television tower.
