The former US Consulate General on the Outer Alster in Hamburg is to become a hotel. The building has been sold, as Consul General Jason Chue confirmed to the “Hamburger Abendblatt”. "The United States of America has signed a contract with Derag for the sale of the former US Consulate General at Alsterufer 27/28."
According to the report, the building, also called the “White House on the Alster,” had been for sale since last fall. The Americans officially opened the new consulate general in HafenCity in the summer of 2022.
The Derag (German Real Estate Group) with headquarters in the Bavarian capital Munich includes the Living Hotels with currently 18 hotels in Berlin, Düsseldorf, Nuremberg, Munich and Frankfurt, among others.
Hotel will be called “The Jefferson”.
"Since I have a deep passion for buildings with history and monuments, I simply fell in love with the house from the first moment," said the managing majority shareholder of Living Hotels, Max Schlereth, to the "Hamburger Abendblatt". The hotel will be called “The Jefferson” and the purchase price for the property will be around 17 million euros.
According to the information, an opening date has not yet been set. According to the report, there is no further information about what the new hotel will look like and how many rooms it will have.
But: “It is essential and important to us that ‘The Jefferson’ becomes part of Hamburg,” said Schlereth. He also emphasized that "since it is a listed building, we will proceed with the redesign extremely carefully, sensitively and in close cooperation with the city of Hamburg." A restaurant including a bar will also move into the building.
