It is not known what the officers thought when they received the call: According to the local police, a driver in the British county of North Yorkshire called the emergency number because he no longer felt able to drive.

British media consistently quoted the authorities as saying that the man said he was "driving drunk and didn't know what he was doing." The driver, who is said to be in his 50s, told the emergency call that he was in the town of Knaresborough and had had “a difficult weekend.”

15 minutes after the call, the police arrived at the drunk man's car. A test showed that he had exceeded the permitted limit for drunk driving three times. He was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving and remained in custody, a police spokesman said.
