In an experiment class using liquid nitrogen held at four elementary schools in Kochi City, a total of 33 children complained of mild frostbite and skin pain after coming into contact with liquid nitrogen. I did.

This class was planned by Kochi City to get people thinking about global warming and was held on February 7th and 8th at four schools: Otsu Elementary School, Koyo Elementary School, Yokohama Shinmachi Elementary School, and Asahi Elementary School, and was held at Kyoto University. We invited an associate professor from the University of Tokyo to conduct an experiment using liquid nitrogen.

The experiment involved spreading liquid nitrogen on the floor of a gymnasium and observing how it evaporates. Kochi City confirmed with four schools that a total of 33 children suffered mild frostbite from contact with liquid nitrogen to their skin. The patient complained of pain and skin pain.

Three of these people visited medical institutions, and their symptoms were said to be mild.

According to Kochi City, although the test was conducted before the experiment, it was carried out on a carpet different from the floor of the gymnasium, and the temperature at this time of the year was low and vaporization of the liquid was slow.

Additionally, although they received a call from the school that a child had complained of symptoms on the first day of the experiment, they continued the experiment after taking measures such as increasing the distance between the child and the area where liquid nitrogen was being sprayed.

Kochi City's Environment Director Koji Takaoka commented, ``We sincerely apologize to the children and their guardians. We will take even greater measures to ensure safety to prevent incidents like this from happening in the future.''
