The British government has warned against German beer in the run-up to the European Football Championship. "The beer can be stronger than in the UK, so drink responsibly, know your limits and respect local laws," says an advisory for foreign travel. "If you drink too much, you might not be allowed into the stadium."

The warning is part of a list of advice for British fans who want to travel to Germany. In addition to information about entry requirements, health insurance and admission to the stadium, there is also information about alcohol in Germany.

World peace instead of German beer

That causes criticism. Tory MP Kevin Foster told the British tabloid Sun: "At a time when there are so many serious issues that the FCDO (Foreign Office - editor's note) are dealing with in terms of world peace Comments about German beer should be the least of your worries.”

Fans traveling to Germany should respect the hosts and their laws, "just as we expect visitors to the United Kingdom to do," he continued. "But they don't need advice from the nanny state."

The European Football Championship starts in Munich on June 14th with the game between Germany and Scotland. England play against Serbia in Gelsenkirchen two days later. As the “Tagesspiegel” reports, British Ambassador Jill Gallard is expecting half a million British fans in the summer.
